This is a very bad blow for our little town, as over three hundred miners will quit Lethbridge.
To day 10th March our large organ arrives.
It is a very powerful instrument and gives us the greatest satisfaction. It is from the Bell Organ Co Guelph. Ont.
Rev. Father Lacombe, now preaching a mission to the Piguis[sic] Indians in Manitoba, writes that he will first visit His Lordship at St Albert, also Calgary, before coming back to McLeod and Pincher Creek.
To Day. 15th Our mines are closed and the men receive their wages… We expect many will leave the town tomorrow.
St. Patricks day was celebrated with solemnity in out church
The High Mass was assisted by a large congregation, a beautiful mass in music was rendered by the choir and very ably accompanied by Mrs Capt. Begin. Father Comiré from MacLeod being on a visit here, was the celebrant.
In the Sanctuary were Father VanTighem and Frère Jean his brother from the Piegan reservation. Father VanTighem addressed the congregation, taking for his Text. I believe in the communion of the Saints… where those words come from? – What is their meaning … They prove the cath doctrine of praying to the Saints of Paradise – of praying for the death – Hence our forefathers placed the nations – the towns – the villages – the people – the individuals under the protection of the Saints – why have you the name of Peter Paul Joseph Patrick etc..? – Why St Marys church – St. Peters – St Paul – St Patricks Cathedral?
All this means the Communion of the Saints.
Our Irish Catholics were very much pleased with the discourse, expecially [sic] with the eulogy the Father made at the end of the

discours [sic], of the Sons of St Patrick – going the World round to plant the Standard of the Cross …and like St Patrick to sow the seed of the Word of God - -
In the evening our ladies held a Grand Bazar at the Opera House, for the benefit of the Convent. At first, we thought it could not be a success on account of the bad times in our mines – But every one was surprised to see a large crowd gathering together in the evening.
Very handsome pieces of needlework – paintings – etc – had been prepared by the Sisters and some other ladies. Nearly three hundred dollars were made that evening.
To day 20th March about 60 men left the town for Great Falls.
- 21th March – Twenty one pieces of goods arrive here from Montreal to day, for Father Lacombe …. mostly all gifts, in books and clothing, from friends in the East. A handsome Altar and tabernacle are also received from St Albert – made by Brother Brochard for our Church of Lethbridge - .
23th [written in the margin]
The new Altar and tabernacle are now put up in the church. They will be veiled, however until Easter Sunday when the Altar will be blessed.
28th [written in the margin]
At about nine o’clock this evening we had a big fire in town – four houses were destroyed. The worse is that some miserable being must have lighted the fire purposely as it started upstairs in a house unoccupied.
We are planting some trees around the church.
April [written in the front margin]
- 7th April Father Lacombe, after an absence of over four months, is expected here to morrow, en route for his Mission of Holy Cross, MacLeod, and Pincher Creek.
