Our Bishop has ordered special prayers for His Holiness who          July 20th [back/right margin]
now is nearing the end of illustrious carier [sic].   
At Eleven this morning, the telegraph brought us the sad               20th [back/right margin]
news that our Glorious Pope Leo XIII has died. R.I.P. Immediately, we ring the Knells, in mourning…..
The Holy Father died on Monday, 20th July at Four minutes after Four in the afternoon…. So we know it here Five hours before, according to our Time.
The R.F. Lacombe arrived in Lethbridge this morning. It was              25 [back/right margin]
now over Two years since the Old Missionary had visited this mission; no need to say that he was welcomed among his friends.
High Mass was celebrated by Father Lacombe … he also               26 [back/right margin]
preached, morning and night, to an eager and most interresting [sic] Congregation. At the evening Service especially we, very much, enjoyed his: Reminicenses [sic]…. Visits to Rome… to the Pope… To Austria – to the Emperor etc. etc.
R. Père Lacombe left here this early morning for Medecin Hat.             29 [back/right margin]
We had a solemn funeral service for the Soul of Leo XIII on Monday morning. The Bishop ordered also : 3 our Fathers and 3 Hail Mary’s, Eternal Rest grant… after every Mass … L’oraison De Spiritu Sancto up to the nomination of the New Pope then Pro Papa for the rest of the year. Since the Pope’s death… We ring 21 Knells in mourning… The flag at Half Mast till the Burial day. Also Veni Creator at Benedictions.
   Who shall be the New Pope ? ?

4th Augt [front/left margin] On Tuesday afternoon, the Fourth day of Augt. at Five-Thirty- the following Telegram arrived here:
Cardinal Sarto has been elected Pope, and has chosen the name of Pious X. He is one of the greatest preachers in the Church. He belonged to the Ecclesiastical Congregations of Bishops and Regulars, Sacred rites, indulgences and sacred relics. He gained great popularity in his diocese and was honored by all for his purity, strict uprightness of his life and for liberalities.   He is a modest agreable [sic] man, highly cultivated, very kindhearted [sic], and still strong and robust in spite of his Sixty-Eight years.
London 4th    The election of Cardinal Sarto as Pope Leo’s successor is well received in Great Briton, Germany and France.
Deo Gratias !!! Vivat Pius X !!! Ad Multos Annos !!!
11t [front/left margin] R.F. Levern OMI from the Blood Reserve arrived here last night. To day is a town holiday and many people have arrived for the occasion.
23 [front/left margin] R.F. Salaun OMI from the Piegan Reserve was in Lethbridge for Two days.
SepT. 8 [front/left margin] To day were purcharged [sic] from McFord “Banker Great Falls, Two Town lots, in front of the church - .for Two Hundred and Fifty dollars $250°°
25 [front/left margin] Have just returned from the Annual Retreat at Calgary, preached by our Able Father Jonquet OMI, who has come her [sic] for the purpose of taking all necessary information on the life and virtue of our regretted Lord Bishop Grandin, and writing the life of this Saintly and noble man.
During the absence of the Priest there were Two funerals and the Priest Coutts [written in pencil in the front/left margin] from Medecin Hat was called here Twice.
Oct. 23 [front/left margin] Father VanTighem went to Coutts last Tuesday…Said Mass at Mr. Tennant’s Homestead on the 21th [sic]. went to Mr. Thom. Farrell s on the Milk River and said Mass there on the 22d… Returning to Lethbridge the same night.
