After a long spell of dry weather we had a fine little rain yesterday      June 15 [back/right margin]
as it happened just in the morning there were few persons at mass. This was our first rain this year. Of course we had our grand snowstorm at the end of May.    Mosquitos have been a torment here for the last Two weeks. We seldom see them on other years.
Rev ‘Father FitzPatrick, Parish Priest of Calgary arrived here          July 4 [back/right margin]
this morning, to preach the annual retreat to the Sister Faithful Companions of Jesus.

We have heavy rains and the weather is rather cold.
His Lordship Bishop Legal O.M.I. will arrive here next Saturday and administer Confirmation next Sunday. As this is his first visit, as Bishop of St Albert, several adresses [sic] are being prepared, One in English – French – Szlovac [sic] – Hungarian and Italian.    The subscription for the cathedral is reaching Three Hundred dollars $300°°.
   Our Beloved Bishop arrived here from the West by the night          14 [back/right margin]
train this morning… in company of R.R. Fathers Doucet of the Piegan Reserve and Blanchet from Pincher. Two rigs, kindly offered by Mr. Harry Taylor, met His Lordship and the Fathers at the station. Confirmation was administered on Sunday 12th to nineteen candidates. The ceremony took place immediately after High Mass… The Bishop himself gave the Sermon.
   What was the most striking spectacle on Sunday morning was the marching of the different societies to the Church accompanied by the Brassband [sic] and preceded by their magnificent banners. It was grand indeed, to see these young men, adorned with

the regalia of their different societies, with admirable order and military comportment marching from the town to the church. Then, forming, so to say, in three different battalions, they paraded in front of the Presbytery while the band executed S [crossed out] several pieces.   The high Mass was a grand affair, the Bishop officiating, with deacon and subdeacon; The church could not contain the people and many had to remain outside the sacred edifice. In the evening the societies, “all Austrians” [underlined], again come to church, and before the service commenced, several addresses, in different languages read by the different nationnalities [sic], were presented to the Bishop. These addresses of welcome were in : English, French, Szlovac [sic], Hungarian and Italian. The Bishop replied to the addresses, and thanked the Catholic population of Lethbridge for their kindness and generosity; He praised the admirable union and concorde [sic] which reigns in the Community, composed of so many nationnalities [sic].
The glorious day was closed with solemn blessing of the Holy Sacrament… the Altar was ablase with colored July 14th [front/left margin] light. Prayers have been ordered for the restoration to health of the Holy Father Leo XIII.    The whole world laments over the illness of the Holy Pontiff… The Protestants Papers especially exalt the successor of Peter… not a discordant voice is heard… All praise and exalt the illustrious Pope, now in His 94th year. Pope Leo XIII very ill… has undergone Two operations extracting the serum of the pleurie [sic] gatherings… cannot live much longer
