Anno Domini 1898. [written on top of the page]
When Christmass [sic] and consequently New Years day cometh on a Saturday, it is rather a trying time for the Priest who Jan. 3rd [written in back/right margin] is all alone in a mission. This is the case this year and I feel rather tired after all these festivals. However when all passes quietly away, when the religious services were well attended… when many faithful approached the holy Sacraments… when no abuses are to be recorded… the missionnaris [sic] is well repaid for his fatigue.
Therefore we breath[sic] a grateful: Deo Gratias !!!
But now, Father VanTighem prepares for a long journey to St Albert. He has been nominated the delegate for the district of Calgary, to the vicarial chapter which is to take place at the Bishops Palace on the 12th day of January…. For, News has arrived from France that the general Chapter and the election of a new Superior General for the Oblate Order, is to take place at Paris on the 19th of May, Being Ascension Day.
The Father was to leave for Medecin [sic] Hat in order to conduct the religious services there on the Sunday previous to the Twelth [sic], but a letter from the Bishop called him at once to Calgary for that Sunday, as there was no Priest to say Mass there. On the following day the Father took the train to Edmonton and from thence to St. Albert. The Election took place in the parlor [sic] of the Palace after the Conventual Mass celebrated by His Lordship Bishop Legal. Were present : our Saintly Bishop Grandin, Bishop Legal, Revd Fathers : Lestanc, Leduc, Doucet, Merer, VanTighem, Therien, Grandin, and Lizée. The Revd Father Merer, actually Superior of the house of St Albert, was nominated the delegate for the General Chapter.

the following Sunday returned by Medecin [sic] Hat and held the religious services there in our little church, both morning and evening;
Jan. 17 [written in front/left margin] arriving home again on the following day, Monday January 17th.
The Revd Father Lacombe is slowly recovering from his illness and being to walk a little in his room.
May 16 [written in front/left margin] Father VanTighem was called to Pincher Creek last week there to meet the other R.R. Fathers of this Southern district, for the monthly retreat; Also to hold council with the rev.d Father Lacombe and Lebret, especially for the situation and futur [sic] erection of a church in McLeod.
During the absence of the Father a german [sic] Catholic, Mr. Younger, aged about sixty, felt sick and was brought to the hospital… he asked several times for the priest and after a few days his mind becoming greatly disturbed, he was to be removed to the guardroom in the Barracks. It was there that during the night, in a moment Of mental aberation [sic] he took his own life by hanging himself. Very sad news for the priest when returning, and this showeth [sic] once more, how very dangerous it is to leave a mission without priest.
21th [sic] [written in front/left margin] We have been saying the Veni [sic] Creator for weeks, to ask the Light of the Holy Spirit for the general Chapter of the Oblate Fathers in Paris, France; and for the election of the New Superior General. Our Bishop Mgr. Legal and the R. Father Mérer the delegate for this diocese are in Paris now and assisting at this great and Holy Meeting… We learn by télégraphic [sic] dispatches, that the reverend Father Augier, Cassien has been elected Superior General on May the 19th, being Ascension Day
