The church was filled up with people from all denominations. The service was very solemnel [sic] and the singing beautiful. The altar looked magnificent, ablaze with lighted tapers. It was two O’Clock before the Thanksgiving mass, which followed immediately the midnight mass, was over; There was almost a general Communion. Confessions were heard from 3 1/2 O’Clock in the afternoon until midnight. I am told that the Methodist minister was present.

The First day of the year has nearly passed away. We have no evening service to night. There was not very many people at mass; and the reason, I suppose is that too many have been feasting last night.
This is the rather sad news I receive to day from the North:
= Revd Father Leduc is worse.. going slowly….
= Revd Father Remas can go no farther…..
= His Lordship Bishop Grandin continually suffering….
= Revd Father Perrault succumbes [sic] from weak chest and goes to the hospital
Who shall take all their places ??
We have as yet no news of the Coadjutor who was to be appointed since long, to help our invalid bishop.
The Archbishop is dying at Montreal, “Mgr Faber” [sic][underlined]
February 6th    We shall have the blessing of Candles to morrow.    Many have already brought packages of tapers to the Church. In the afternoon we shall have the usual procession with the Statue of the infant Jesus in Church. Then, also, the children are blessed and all the Mothers bring their babies to church. After the ceremony the children all go to the schoolrooms where a little lottery takes place and the customary distribution of candies. It is the Childrens [sic] Feast!
