May 10th 1897 [written in the top margin]
is now our help bishop … For a long time we awaited this nomination and were almost sure of the appointment, so that the news was not a surprise but rather a happy relief of our long suspence [sic] – Monseigneur Legal is quite young, enjoys good health, is a man of good learning and has been in this diocese for about sixteen years … ad multos annos!!!
Father VanTighem goes to Montana to night, for the fulfilment of the Easter Duties of some persons along our South road…
May 10th [written in front/left margin] Our school reopened to day after having been closed for over a month on account of sickness in town.
28th [written in front/left margin] Brother John Berchmans came to visit his brother to Lethbridge. A young Indian Blackfoot was his companion; he is one of the few who have resolved to lead a christian [sic] life, he has done his first communion lately.   The Rev & Father Doucet came also to celebrate the feast of the ascension in Lethbridge… They all departed, last night to Piegan Reserve.
News has arrived from St Albert: . that Mgr Legal will be consecrated on Corpus Christi 17 June in the cathedral of St. Albert.   Our annuel [sic] retreat is to precede [sic] this great ceremony and therefore the Father will be abscent [sic] from Lethbridge for Two or Three weeks. He will leave on Monday the 7th of June.

Bishops: Durieu, Clut, Legal and the Consacrating [sic] Prelate Mgr Grandin.   There were about Fourty priests – many brothers and sisters from different Convents and Missions.   It rained the whole day of the Consacration [sic] and consequently there were not so many visitors as it was expected, though the Cathedral was well filled.   Archbishop Langevin made an eloquent sermon at Mass.
The very day of the Consacration [sic] many Fathers left St Albert in the evening, in order to take the train early in the morning from Edmonton to Calgary – but arrived at Red Dear [sic] River, news arrived from the south that many bridges had been carried away by the flood. It was late in the evening of the 18th when we left Red Dear [sic] and we passed the night about three miles from Calgary --- We walked-in to town partly, then, a handcarr [sic] took us somewhat farther and finally an engine with Caboos [sic] brought us to the Station. It was nearly noon before we reached the Mission. Among the unfortunate voyageurs were the ArchBishop; Mgr. Durieu, and six fathers. R. Mother Green was there also.   On Sunday the 20th the ArchBishop preached a most eloquent sermon in the church at Calgary.   This being the Jubilee Sunday of Queen Victoria the Sermon was for the occasion. Several protestant ministers were in church as also some distinguished Visiters [sic] who were detained at Calgary on account of the flood. It was a great surprise indeed to all, who, for the first time heard Mgr Langevin.   We may, very well be proud to have such an able man at the head of our ecclesiastical Province.
