The baby, about a year old, rolled down with the stream and was pikked [sic] up far below. It was first thought the child was dead, but it revived after a while and is still alive. The mother also is out of danger. [Coutts written in pencil in the front margin]; July 12th [written in the back/right margin]
Father VanTighem just arrives from Coutts and the boundary line where he has 20th July [written in margin] been to visit the few Catholics of that place.   Capt. Begin who is in charge of the different detachments along the line, took the Father as far as Writing On Stone [underlined], on the Milk river.   This place is a real wonder to behold. The banks of this river, a Soft Sand Stone, are cut and carved and sculptured in all imaginable forms and shapes. – The most picturesque views can be seen there. – The heavy winds … and rains and storms have, in the course of time, modelled villages and towns with domes and towers and colums [sic] and monuments, worth to be seen.
The Indians of ancient times seem to have admired these strange formations. They must have passed considerable time among these natural fortresses, for their exploits and haut-faits d’armes are cut in the bases of these huge rocks and monuments. It is to be deplored that time is destroying fast the ancient hieroglyflic [sic] signs.
