was celebrated with solemnity. After mass the school children walked back to the school house where a lottery for handsome prizes took place – after which followed a distribution of Candies.
In the afternoon came the sports.. sac [sic] races, foot races – three leg races – ring races – boot and shoe- races etc etc – At 4 O’Clock we had a solemn Benediction with the Bl. Sacrament and Te Deum!.. A monster supper was now ready at the Convent for all the pupils, and 82 young stomachs attacked the good things set before them.-
A magnificent show of the Magic Lantern, by Rev.Father Legal was the crowning of the festival. For over two hours the children gazed with up braithed [?] silence, to the handsome Views appearing as by Magic upon the pure white linnen [sic] sheet….
Before departing another lottery for some agreable [sic] pleathings [sic] took place .- and another pale of candies was emptied into their pockets.   Never our children had enjoyed such a festival day! Never, they say, the memory of Columbus Day will vanquish out of their memory!
Oct. 31st   Sad news arrives from France: Our Very Reverend Father Fabre, Superior General of the Oblate Fathers died last week at Royaumont, after having been ill for several weeks.    R.I.P.
The general administration has sent a large mourning circular to all the houses and missions of our Congregation.
Every priest of the Society will say five masses for the departed soul of our beloved Father General – The Brothers will offer five Holy Communions.
May He rest in peace.   Amen.

31. Oct. [written in top front margin]   Another fatal message is brought us also over from France this morning. The Mother Visitor to our convent this spring, having returned to France, send us the painful news, that it has been decided by the Sup. Gen. in council to withdraw the Sisters from Lethbridge.    The reason why is : because they have no subjects enough for their institutions.   And we may ask: why then, has this good Mother Gibson established a new convent at Rat Portage, lately?      This good mother Visitor is far from being in order of sanctity here.   Now that the mission has been to so great expenses of building a Convent –
Now that the good Sisters, after great privations, are so conveniently settled….   Now that everything is prosperous, they must abandone [sic] this establishment.
However, if it is the Will of God, “of which we greatly doubt,” We humbly submit – or at least, try to do so.
Nov. [written in the front margin] Father VanTighem receives news from Belgian [sic]. Some old lady relatives make again the gift of two hundred franks to the missions --   This is the fourth time they make such generous gifts. May the Lord reward their Kind generosity!
Nov.5th. [written in front margin] It seems the Hand of God is chastising us: Father Leduc is now prostrated with inflamatory [sic] rheumatisme [sic] at the Calgary Hospital.   Besides him, there is at the same Charitable institution, Father André, whose days are now few; he suffers from dropsy and cannot recover.
Dec 9t. [written in the front margin] Yesterday we celebrated the festival of the Immaculate Conception.   The children song their own mass and in the afternoon we held the usual procession in Church... These devotionnal [sic] ceremonies are liked very much by the children, and make great impression on Them.
