The Father at high mass gave an account of the subscription list, which amounted presently to over Eight hundred dollars; But, said the Father, very likely we will employ this money for the purpose of inlarging [sic] the church this summer.

Good news from France !! Our good bishop has undergone a painful operation… three stones were growing for years in the blatter [sic] and the doctors have crushed and extracted them… this operation must have been horrible and surely, if our Illustre patient had not been the strongest of constitutions, He never could have endured it. His Lordship is improving fast. The operation has been a real success.
May 11t [written in the front margin] The general Chapter of our Congregation meets to day. The new superior general will be elected this evening.
May 22th [sic] [written in the front margin] We learn from the new papers, that the reverend Father Soullier is our new Superior General. It was generally expected that it would be him, as certainly he is the most able to fill this so important position. This very Reverend Father has visited all our houses in the five parts of the World. The only regret, expressed by everybody, is that his very reverend Father is so advanced in years … over fifty. – May God preserve him for another half century!!!
