Coalbanks, was the name of the place where actually stands Lethbridge.
This first name was derived, like that of many others in the North West Territories of Canada, from its geological and mineral situation.
Here was a seam of coal, underlying these immense prairies at the depth of about three hundred feet from its surface, but brought to view by a stream of water which has its source in the Rocky Mountains.
If nature’s Author had not Himself uncovered this treasure of black diamonds, perhaps centuries would have passed before discovering these large coalfields.
This stream, which becomes almost a torrent, when in June, the snow thaws in the mountains, is called the Belly River; or better: Big Belly River. “Rivière des Gros Ventres”
Years ago, a tribe of Indians called the Big Bellies inhabiting these regions, had their name given to
